GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the practice of optimising your digital presence so that AI-powered search engines (such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity) reference, cite, and recommend your brand in their generated answers.

AI SEO is the broader discipline. It covers both classical SEO signals and the structural changes that make your site readable to AI crawlers and answer engines.

GEO and AI SEO work by sending the right signals to AI systems so they trust your brand as a source. Three things matter most.

  • Structure. AI engines extract answers, not pages. Content with clear questions, direct answers, and clean schema gets pulled more often.
  • Authority. AI weighs what other trusted sources say about you. Brand mentions, citations, and consistent business information across the web all feed the signal.
  • Entity clarity. AI needs to know exactly who you are, what you do, and how you relate to your category. Structured data, internal linking, and topical depth all compound over time.

No. GEO and AI SEO are not replacements for traditional SEO. They are an evolution.

Google itself confirms this in its official AI optimisation guide for Google Search, where it states that its generative AI features (including AI Overviews and AI Mode) are “rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems.” In plain terms: AI Overviews pull straight from the Google Search index, so traditional SEO best practices still drive your visibility inside Google’s AI features.

That said, classical SEO alone is no longer enough. Users increasingly bypass Google entirely and ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude for recommendations. Those platforms use their own retrieval and citation logic. The most effective strategy combines classical SEO with AI SEO and GEO to ensure your brand is discoverable across all search experiences.

If your audience uses AI search tools (and increasingly, most audiences do), then yes. SEO ensures you rank in traditional search results, but it does not guarantee that AI models will cite or recommend your brand. GEO and AI SEO specifically target the signals that generative engines use to select sources, including entity clarity, content structure, authority signals, and citation presence. Adding GEO and AI SEO to your existing SEO strategy gives you comprehensive search visibility. A practical place to start is making sure your content is structured the way AI engines extract from.
You can spot-check it yourself by asking ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity questions a buyer in your category would ask. If your brand does not appear in the answer, or appears with the wrong details, you have a GEO and AI SEO gap.

No. We start with an audit to identify which pages already perform well, which are close to citation-ready, and which are not worth the effort. From there we focus structural edits on the pieces with the highest upside. The goal is the best return per hour of work, not a full site rewrite.

llms.txt is a proposed standard, similar in spirit to robots.txt, that tells AI crawlers which content on your site they can use, in what context, and how to attribute it. It is not yet enforced by every AI platform.

Google explicitly says you do not need llms.txt for Google Search. In its AI optimisation guide, Google lists llms.txt and similar “special” markup under what you can ignore for visibility in its own AI features (AI Overviews and AI Mode), because those features run on the regular Google Search index.

For GEO outside of Google, llms.txt can still matter. Some early-adopter AI platforms, such as Perplexity and Anthropic, do read it. Implementing it is a small technical AI SEO win: it signals you take AI traffic seriously, helps prevent your content from being mis-summarised by these platforms, and future-proofs your site as more platforms adopt the standard.
