Paying for SEO Tools? Most of What You Need Is Free

Quick answer:

Free tools cover most SEO work for a single website, and paying makes sense once you need competitor data, daily rank tracking or keyword research at volume.

Key Takeaways

  • Google Search Console is free and reports the queries, clicks and average positions your own pages get in Google.
  • Search Console, Google Analytics, Keyword Planner, Lighthouse and a free crawler cover most needs for one website.
  • Free tools show little about a competitor's keywords or backlinks, and free versions of paid tools cap how much you can use them.
  • Pay for a tool only if you will use its data to make decisions, and pay monthly until it has proved useful.
  • Tracking how AI assistants mention your business has no serious free option yet.

You do not need paid tools to do most of the SEO work for one website. Google Search Console and Google Analytics, the two tools you will use most, are both free.

Free tools have limits, though. They show little about the keywords your competitors rank for, and some cap how much keyword research or crawling you can do.

Start with the free tools

Set these up before paying for anything:

Google Search Console

Search Console shows how your site performs in Google. Google's page for the product describes it this way:

"Search Console tools and reports help you measure your site's Search traffic and performance, fix issues, and make your site shine in Google Search results."

Keyword tools estimate traffic, while Search Console reports what your own pages actually received. The quickest wins usually sit in queries with many impressions where your page ranks just outside the first page.

Its limit is that it only covers Google. Bing Webmaster Tools is free as well, and our comparison of the two consoles covers what each one shows.

Business Profile insights and Google Analytics

If you have a Google Business Profile, its performance report shows how many people found your listing, and how many called, messaged you or asked for directions. Whether that listing needs a website beside it is a separate question, covered in our guide to running on a listing alone.

Google Analytics 4 is free, though setting up conversion tracking properly takes time. Our comparison of GA4, Plausible and Fathom explains how GA4 compares with the paid options.

Page speed and Lighthouse

PageSpeed Insights is free and combines lab tests with field data from real Chrome users. For most small sites it is all the speed monitoring they need.

Test the pages that bring in enquiries first. For example, a slow contact page loses more business than a slow blog post.

Chrome has a similar test built in, called Lighthouse. Right-click the page, choose Inspect, open the Lighthouse tab and click Analyze page load, and a report on speed, accessibility and SEO appears within a minute.

In Chrome 150 or later, Lighthouse also has an experimental Agentic Browsing category. It checks how easily AI agents that browse websites for people can read and use your page.

Structured data and on-page checks

Google's Rich Results Test checks the structured data on a page, such as product, review or breadcrumb markup. It shows which rich results the page qualifies for and flags errors to fix.

For quick checks on any page, including a competitor's, the free Detailed SEO Extension for Chrome shows the title tag, meta description, headings and schema markup in one click.

Site crawls

Screaming Frog crawls up to 500 URLs for free, which covers many small sites completely. It finds broken links, redirect chains and missing page titles.

Once a site grows past 500 URLs, our Screaming Frog and Sitebulb comparison covers which paid crawler to choose.

Free versions of paid tools

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools gives verified site owners free backlink and site audit data for their own website. It shows up to 1,000 backlinks at a time, which is enough for most small sites.

Keyword research

Google Keyword Planner is free and shows average monthly searches for keywords, plus related ideas from a word or a competitor's website. It runs inside Google Ads, so you need a Google Ads account to use it.

Ubersuggest also has a limited free version for keyword research. Treat its search volumes as estimates and use them to compare keywords against each other.

Where free tools stop

Competitor data is the first gap. Free tools show little about which keywords a rival ranks for or which of its pages bring in the most traffic.

Keyword research comes next. Free versions of paid keyword tools cap how many searches you can run and how many keyword ideas each search returns, which slows down planning for a large content programme.

Rank tracking follows. Search Console shows average positions over time, while a paid tracker records daily rankings for keywords of your choice.

Crawl size and AI monitoring are the last two. A free crawl stops at 500 URLs, and no serious free tool yet tracks how often AI assistants mention your business, which is why dedicated monitoring tools exist.

How to decide when to pay

A paid tool is worth it only if you use its data to make decisions. For example, a keyword tool is worth paying for if you publish every week and use it to choose what to write next.

Pay monthly until a tool has been in regular use for three months, then consider the annual discount.

Which tools fit your situation

Your situationWhat to runWhy
One website, one local market, tight budgetFree tools onlySearch Console shows your clicks and rankings, Keyword Planner covers keyword research, and Screaming Frog crawls up to 500 URLs free.
Publishing weekly against strong competitorsFree tools plus one paid suiteA paid suite such as Ahrefs or Semrush shows which keywords your competitors rank for.
E-commerce, a site over 500 URLs or several marketsPaid crawler, suite and rank trackingScreaming Frog's free version stops at 500 URLs, and you need daily rankings across many pages or markets.
Concerned about AI answersManual checks firstAsk ChatGPT and Gemini the questions your customers ask, and check whether your business is named.

Keep Search Console set up even if you pay for other tools. It shows the real clicks your site gets from Google, while paid tools only estimate them.

The bottom line

Most businesses with one website can run solid SEO on free tools for years. The gaps worth paying for are competitor data, tracked rankings and keyword research at volume.

Review your tools whenever the site grows. A setup that suits a 20-page site will slow down work on a 2,000-page one, and the fix is usually one new subscription.
