SEO Title vs H1: Stop Writing for the Plugin Score

SEO Title vs H1: Stop Writing for the Plugin Score

Quick answer:

The SEO title is the headline you write for Google's search results, and the H1 is the headline visitors read on the page. Keep your full headline as the H1, and write a shorter SEO title only when the search preview cuts off the words people search for.

Key Takeaways

  • As a metaphor, the SEO title is the sign outside a shop, and the H1 is the welcome banner inside it.
  • The SEO title and the H1 can use different wording, as long as both describe the same page.
  • SEO plugins such as Rank Math, Yoast and AIOSEO score your title against their own checklists, and Rank Math's guide says a post with a lower score can still rank well.
  • Google sets no character limit on titles and shortens long ones to fit the screen, so 60 characters is a rule of thumb.
  • Google's list of common reasons for replacing a title includes half empty, outdated, inaccurate and repeated titles.

A site owner on r/SEO asked whether to keep the article title as the SEO title, or cut it shorter because the Rank Math score suggested a shorter version.

Many site owners ask this when their SEO plugin says a title is too long. Below, we explain how the SEO title differs from the H1, what plugin scores such as Rank Math's check, and when to shorten your SEO title.

What the SEO title and the H1 each do

As a metaphor, picture your page as a shop. The SEO title is the short sign outside that people see on Google, and the H1 is the fuller welcome banner inside.

Who reads itSomeone choosing between ten resultsSomeone who already clicked

Where you set itThe SEO title box in your SEO pluginUsually the post title at the top of your editor

In the backend, the SEO title is stored in the page's title tag. Google reads both, and its title links documentation lists the title tag and headings such as the H1 among the sources it uses for the headline in search results.

What a green plugin score measures

SEO plugins grade each page against a checklist and show the result as a score, usually in a panel beside your editor.

An SEO plugin panel beside the post editor showing a score of 82/100 and a checklist of passed and failed tests

We compared how the main ones work in our guide to WordPress SEO plugins, and their title checks are similar:

  • Rank Math scores a post out of 100. Its guide to scoring 100 includes putting the focus keyword in the first half of the title and adding a number and a power word.
  • Yoast gives a green traffic light when the SEO title has an optimal width.
  • AIOSEO's TruSEO score checks whether the title fits in search results and how early the keyword appears.

A title can pass every check and still describe the page badly. Rank Math says this itself in the same guide:

"Even a post with a lower score can rank well if all the other factors are optimized well."

If the title already tells searchers what the page offers, leave it.

Title length is about screen width

Google sets no character limit on titles. Its title links documentation puts it this way:

"While there's no limit on how long a title element can be, the title link is truncated in Google Search results as needed, typically to fit the device width."

So the 60 character limit in plugins is only an estimate. Two titles with the same number of characters can be cut at different points, because a letter like W takes up more space than a letter like i.

How to write a title tag that earns the click

Google's SEO Starter Guide describes a good title as unique to the page, clear and concise, and an accurate description of the page. Four habits put that into practice:

  1. Put the words people search for near the start, so the mobile preview shows them too.
  2. Name what the page gives the reader, such as more information about a service or contact details for a business.
  3. Write a separate title for every page, including pages you build from one template or vibe code with an AI builder.
  4. Use each search phrase once.

For example, "Kitchen Renovation Cost in 2026, With 12 Real Quotes" names the search, the year and what the reader gets in 52 characters.

Write a compelling meta description too, using our guide on meta descriptions that get clicks.

Why Google rewrites titles, and how to keep yours

Google uses your title tag for most results. In a September 2021 post, Google said title elements were used around 87% of the time.

For the rest, Google builds the headline from other text on the page. Its documentation lists the common causes:

ProblemGoogle's exampleFix
Half empty title"| Site Name" with no page nameMake the title template fill in the page name
Obsolete title"2020 admissions criteria" on a page headed "2021 admissions criteria"Update the title tag whenever you update the headline
Inaccurate titleNamed products in the title of a page whose products keep changingDescribe what the page always contains
Repeated titlesEvery season page of a TV show forum uses the show's name aloneAdd the detail that separates each page, such as the season number
No clear main titleSeveral headings with the same size and stylingMake one H1 the largest heading on the page

Google notices a new title only after it recrawls the page, which can take a few days to a few weeks. To speed this up, open the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console and click Request Indexing (see Google's recrawl guide).

Should you shorten your SEO title?

Shorten the SEO title when it helps the searcher, and leave it alone when the only reason is a plugin score.

Your situationWhat to do
The full headline fits in the preview and starts with the search termsUse the same text for the H1 and the SEO title
The preview cuts off the main search termsWrite a shorter SEO title that starts with them, and keep the full headline as the H1
The headline is a play on words without the search termsWrite a plain SEO title that names the topic
Your plugin flags a missing number or power wordAdd one only if it is true of the page
Google shows a different title from yoursFix the matching problem from Google's list and wait for a recrawl

The bottom line

Write the H1 for the reader on the page and the SEO title for the person scanning the search results.
